HISTORY OF ST. GERMAINE
Founded September 14, 1984
Barbara Christensen*, founder, and nine friends wanted to address the problem of child abuse in some positive way.
Their first meeting was held on September 14, 1984. Each founding member of St. Germaine invited 10 friends to a Coffee held at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. Norma Hirsh, Founder and then President of the Child Abuse Prevention Foundation (CAPF), was the speaker. Norma explained the part CAPF was taking in fighting child abuse. At the close of the meeting, they had recruited 45 members to St. Germaine Auxiliary. Monthly luncheon meetings were held at various locations featuring numerous speakers such as volunteers at the CAPF office, among them Lois Kolender and Mimi Groom. Co-Founders of CAPF, Mary Avery and Rob Butterfield, were also featured speakers as well as Beth Lennon, the Honorable Judge Elizabeth Zumwalt and Dr. David Chadwick. By the close of their first year, St. Germaine had a membership of 200.
The first large fund-raising event, held in March 1985, was a Dinner Theatre event at the Hall of Champions with a final dress rehearsal presentation at the Globe Theatre. They raised $25,000 and were able to purchase two colposcopes for David Chadwick’s Center for Child Protection. Since its founding, St. Germaine, under the leadership of dedicated founders, presidents and enthusiastic members, has thrived, adding to its membership each year. To date, St. Germaine has donated over $4,500,000 in monies and an estimated $1,700,000 of in-kind donations to the San Diego community.
